Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is a dreaded word as it is the most common cause of blindness in the United States. Macular degeneration can ruin reading and central vision because it destroys the most sensitive part of the retina known as the macula. It typically affects elderly patients but it can also act in younger patients with a strong family history. People can reduce their risk of vision loss from macular degeneration by reducing the amount of UV rays entering the light and by consuming a diet rich in anti-oxidants and other nutrients. Most importantly, patients at risk, age greater than 60 or with a strong family history, should have a comprehensive Ophthalmologic exam every year.

The doctors at Eye and Laser Physicians can evaluate and treat Macular Degeneration in our Walla Walla office.
